History in the Making: Dystany Spurlock Prepares to Become First Black Woman to Compete in NASCAR’s ARCA Series on March 28

4h

This weekend, the sound of roaring engines at Hickory Motor Speedway will carry a weight far beyond the usual thrill of competition. As the green flag prepares to drop for the ARCA Menards Series East season opener, all eyes will be on the No. 66 Ford Mustang. Behind the wheel will be Dystany Spurlock, a 33-year-old driver poised to etch her name into the record books. When she takes the track on March 28, Spurlock will officially become the first Black woman to compete in the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) series, a historic moment decades in the making.

For Spurlock, this moment is the culmination of a lifelong dream. Transitioning from the world of motorcycle drag racing to the stock cars of NASCAR’s developmental ranks, she understands the significance of her journey. “This moment means everything to me,” Spurlock told ARCA in a recent interview. “Since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamed of racing in NASCAR. I’ve worked so hard for this, so many opportunities that have come and gone, but now I’m really here, and I’m ready. I’m excited to build my race craft and learn, and hopefully make it to the Cup level.”

Breaking Barriers at the ‘Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars’

The stage for this historic debut is Hickory Motor Speedway in North Carolina, avenue often nicknamedthe “Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars.” This track is renowned as a proving ground, a place where up-and-coming talent sharpens their skills before moving up to the highest levels of motorsport. For Spurlock, competing at Hickory is more than just a race; it is a declaration of presence in a sport where she has long been underrepresented.

Spurlock will be driving the No. 66 Ford Mustang for MBM Motorsports and Garage 66, a team owned by former NASCAR driver Carl Long. This partnership places her within a respected organization known for giving drivers a chance to develop their race craft. The ARCA series, which was founded in 1953 and has been an official part of the NASCAR structure since 2018, serves as a critical stepping stone. Often compared to college athletics or the NBA’s G-League, it provides a platform for rising stars to hone their skills, gain experience, and attract the attention—and sponsorship—necessary to ascend to the elite NASCAR Cup Series.

From Motorcycle Drag Racing to the ARCA Grid

While the headlines celebrate her as a newcomer to NASCAR’s developmental ranks, Dystany Spurlock is no stranger to high-speed competition. Her racing background is deeply rooted in the world of motorcycles, where she has been drag racing since 2017. That experience has not only sharpened her reflexes but also built a foundation of resilience and business acumen. She currently manages her own National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) team, an achievement she describes as being “beyond” her “wildest dreams.”

This unique path from two wheels to four represents a significant pivot in her career, but one she has approached with the same intensity she brought to the drag strip. She has been documenting every step of this transition in a docuseries titled Driven by Dystany: The Road to NASCAR, available on her YouTube channel. The series offers fans an intimate look at the preparation, the challenges, and the sheer determination required to make the leap into stock car racing, providing a raw and authentic look at the making of a history-maker.

A Moment of Inspiration During Women’s History Month

The timing of Spurlock’sdebut is particularly resonant, occurring during Women’s History Month. Her entry into the ARCA series adds a powerful new chapter to the ongoing narrative of Black women in motorsports. She joins a lineage of pioneers, following in the tire tracks of figures like Brehanna Daniels, who made history as the first Black woman pit crew member in NASCAR.

Spurlock’s journey serves as a visible reminder that the world of racing is becoming more inclusive. The significance of her stepping onto the grid at Hickory is not lost on the racing community, which has rallied around her story. As she prepares to join the ranks of other history-makers—including the recent buzz surrounding Michael Jordan’s involvement in racing—Spurlock stands as a testament to perseverance. Her message is clear: she has worked through opportunities that “have come and gone,” but now, she is here, ready to compete and build a legacy that will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of young girls who dream of hearing “start your engines.”
