Dr. LeRoi Hicks Takes Helm at American College of Physicians

Dr. LeRoi Hicks will become the first African-American physician to serve as executive vice president and CEO of the American College of Physicians (ACP). He will succeed Darilyn Moyer and officially assume the role on July 6, 2026. This appointment marks a notable step for representation in medical leadership, as Hicks brings decades of experience in clinical care and hospital management.

Darilyn Moyer praised Hicks’ selection, saying, “Serving ACP over the past decade has been one of the great honors of my career. I am confident leaving ACP in Dr. Hicks’ capable hands. His aptitude for business leadership, commitment to health equity, and focus on patient-centered care will guide ACP into its next chapter of growth and innovation.”

Hicks shared hisexcitement for the position, stating, “I am humbled to be selected to lead ACP at a time when internal medicine physicians are navigating profound challenges and unprecedented opportunities in a rapidly evolving health care environment. I look forward to working with ACP’s leadership and staff to deliver programs and services that support physicians across every stage of their career and advance equitable access to high-quality care for all.”

A Career Anchored in Clinical Excellence

Hicks earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Mount Auburn Hospital, serving as chief resident. He furthered his training with a general medicine and faculty development fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and later earned a Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Since 2014, Hicks has served at ChristianaCare, a health system based in Delaware, holding a variety of leadership positions. His career path included acute medicine service line lead in 2016, chief medical officer of Wilmington Hospital in 2020, campus executive director in 2023, and president of Wilmington Hospital in 2025. His work has consistently focused on improving hospital operations, patient care, and health equity initiatives.

Leadership Focused on Equity and Vision

As president of Wilmington Hospital, Hicks was responsible for the hospital’s overall vision, financial health, and daily operations. His leadership has been widely recognized for promoting equitable access to care and prioritizing patient-centered programs.

Hicks’ new role at ACP will allow him to extend this vision to a national level. The organization serves internal medicine physicians across the United States, offering education, advocacy, andprograms that shape the practiceof medicine. With his background in both clinical care and executive management, Hicks is positioned to guide ACP into its next phase while addressing the evolving needs of the medical community.

Howard University Alumnus Brings Experience and Perspective

Hicks’ journey began as a student at Howard University, a historically Black university renowned for cultivating leaders in medicine and public service. His educational foundation, combined with rigorous clinical training and executive experience, equips him to navigate complex healthcare challenges.

As the first Black physician to hold the EVP and CEO role at ACP, Hicks’ appointment represents both recognition of his personal achievements and a broader moment for diversity in healthcare leadership. His focus on patient care, equity, and operational excellence positions him as a transformative figure in internal medicine.
